A few updates as we close out September

Open Castle: Thank you to everyone that attended our Open Castle event. It was great to see you all and welcome parents in the building. We hope that you enjoyed yourself and found the event to be informative. I’ve collected the following feedback from staff and leadership:

  • Glows:

  1. Attendance was very strong with over 150 students represented by a family member

  1. Many families were able to connect to critical resources (Hero, Schoology, Support Services, etc)

  1. Flexible scheduling made the event more accessible for families

  • Grows:

  1. Stations should be more spread out and more clearly identified

  1. Flow of stations could have been more strategic to avoid build up of line

  1. Schoology station could have been more efficient

My team and I will be working to implement feedback to create an even better event in the spring semester.

Common Assessments: We are just two weeks away from Common Assessments. Please remind your student that every second of instructional time matters. We are experiencing significant numbers of tardies – every time a student is late to class, they are missing critical information. Please remind your student to move urgently between classes. During our next Coffee with the Principal, our Director of Academics will be sharing more information about our assessment and academic programming.

Coffee with the Principal #2: Our second Coffee with the Principal is scheduled for October 5th at 9:30 AM. This is an opportunity to connect with various leaders on campus and other parents. Topics we will discuss are below. Please RSVP using this link.

  • Topic #1: Academic Programming & Common Assessments – Special Guest Ms. Romero our Director of Academics

  • Topic #2: Student Support – Special Guest Ms. Beck-Lee our Student Support Counselor

Lunch Lines: Over the last several days, we have encountered staffing issues that are leading to slower moving lunch lines. We are working to encourage students to quickly make a selection and move through the line so that they have sufficient time to eat. Our Director of Campus Operations and I have been and will continue to work with SBISD food services to rectify the staffing issues. Please support us in this effort by encouraging your student to move urgently through the line.

Hispanic Heritage Potluck:

We are inviting all families to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with us on September 29, 2022 from 5:30-6:30 in the cafeteria. Bring your favorite dish to share! We will be hosting a game of Loteria and there will be prizes for all our winners. Let us know if you will attend by RSVP with this link.

Hispanic Heritage Spirit Week

Students and staff are encouraged to participate in a Hispanic Heritage Spirit Week the week of October 3rd - October 5th.

See the calendar above for specific themes.

8th Grade updates

8th Grade families, this Wednesday 9/21 will be our first school field trip. We will be going to the Guthrie Center. Permission slips were due 9/21 and 9/22 but if you have not signed it yet, please make sure to send it to school with your student by Monday 9/26.

Students in the ESL Program

Emergent Bilingual students who took TELPAS in the Spring will receive an envelope containing their test results in the near future. Students are permitted to view their results without a parent present. However, please take a look at your student's progress in Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing and reach out to me (Rachel Reed) if you have any questions.

Fill the Fridge for Staff

Fill the Fridge is something we started last year where parents can drop off various items and snacks for staff. If you are interested in donating items any time throughout the year, please sign up here. Everything is always greatly appreciated by our staff.
